I own a KMG and the Oregon Blade Maker and I like both. The KMG is more robust but also is considerably more expensive. The OBM is a solid, well made grinder. Get the grinder with flat platen attachment for $495 and a Leeson 1.5hp motor for $320 and you will have a great, reliable grinder for well under a grand.

I recently purchased the Oregon Blade Maker Grinder. It is a very solid, well built machine. I purchased the chassis, drive wheel, work rest, 1.5 hp motor, variable speed drive, and a bunch of belts and ended up around the $1200 mark. I remember comparing prices, and I think it was about $175 more to get the full variable speed set up.

Now I remember, you're looking at the Oregon Blade Maker Grinder - you'll need a nice plate of aluminum (or steel) at least 3/8" would be nice for the aluminum to bolt the grinder and motor to. Then perhaps a set screw to adjust angle of motor to tweak in alignment nicely. Should work like a champ. Ken H>

The esteem only has one tool arm slot, for some guys that isn't an issue but with the amount of grinders available not having a secondary tool arm makes it a pass for me. Most grinders are based off the 1.5 inch tool arm system and so anything that doesn't accept that size is usually a pass for me as well.
